17 TRW Sports Day, having fun, staying fit Published Feb. 2, 2010 By Airman 1st Class Anne Gathua 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AFB, Texas -- The quarterly wing Sports Day will be held Feb. 12, 6:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the physical training pad near Mathis Fitness Center. Sports Day replaced the quarterly Wing Run where runners ran in formation round the old flightline. "It's a quarterly event that provides an opportunity for military and civilians (with approval) to participate in various sporting events while representing their squadron," said Mr. Martin Littlefield, fitness and sports manager. Ms. Natalie McCoy, special events and incentive's coordinator, said it is important for service members to stay fit because the military functions around being healthy and fit. "The harsh environment of deployments, including stress, eating and sleeping habits and being away from home can take a big toll on the mind and body. Being healthy, eating and sleeping well and exercising regularly can reduce any issues while deployed," said Ms. McCoy. "The more fit a person is the better they can handle their situation and the more aware and alert they are. Sports Day is a way to build morale while promoting fit lifestyles that will sustain our overall mission as a military." The sporting events planned for the day include basketball, volleyball, dodge ball, kickball, pull-up, sit-up and push-up competitions, 5k-run, 440 and 100 yard runs, 5-on-5 soccer matches, racquetball, individual's tennis and horseshoe tournaments and a one-mile relay finale on the Mathis Fitness Center track for the final top four units. Mr. Littlefield said Sports Day gives everyone a chance to exercise, relieve stress and have fun. It also generates community cohesion, improves productivity and quality of life through fitness promotion and promotes esprit de corps, he added. "This is a big event that requires a lot of coordination and help," said Mr. Littlefield. "We wouldn't be able to pull this off without the help of Physical Training Leaders and volunteers." Everyone is encouraged to participate. For more information contact your unit representative or first sergeant.
