This is a charitable time of year and giving to those in need is what the Goodfellow Commissary had in mind when it recently won a 2009 Field of Dreams contest. Commissary employees' hard work, along with commissary patron participation, helped win the contest and the prizes that included toys, bicycles, scooters, footballs and basketballs, and were donated to the Goodfellow AFB First Sergeant's Warmheart project on Tuesday.
The Field of Dreams promotion was sponsored by Continental Sarvis and encouraged youth to stay active. During the promotion, the Defense Commissary Agency championed exercise and healthy eating for patrons and employees. Debbie Manning, Goodfellow Health and Wellness Center Dietician, conducted healthy choice demonstrations using fruits and vegetables from the commissary. The Goodfellow HAWC also provided an exercise bike, which patrons and employees used to build up time exercising and earn points in the President's Fitness Challenge.
The Goodfellow Commissary achieved recognition for the largest sales increase in DeCA for the vendor's products during the promotion. "We were able to purchase bicycles and sports equipment with gift cards we received for certain vendor sales increases. We presented the prizes to Goodfellow Commissary patrons for all their achievements and are honored the Goodfellow first sergeant's accepted the prizes for the Warmheart program," Heather Barnes, Regional District Manager for the Continental Division said "it's only fitting that these toys in turn will be presented to deserving children of the Goodfellow community for the holidays."
Master Sgt. Michael Miller, 17th Medical Group first sergeant, along with Tech. Sgt. Jason Suffoletta and Tech. Sgt. Joseph Stagner, both 17th Communications Squadron acting first sergeants, accepted the gift from Claire Cook, Merchandiser for Continental Sarvis.
"It's a great thing the vendors and the commissary did," said Master Sgt. Miller "they're going to make a lot of kids happy on Christmas Day!"
