Goodfellow Breaks Ground for new facilities Published Nov. 10, 2009 By 1st Lt. Joel N. Hansen 17th Civil Engineering Squadron GOODFELLOW AFB, Texas -- Last week, ground was broken on Goodfellow AFB for two critical military construction projects. The Mathis Fitness Center expansion and new pipeline student dormitory projects both had their dirt ceremonially turned, symbolizing the lasting relationship throughout the project's planning and design between Team Goodfellow, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Forth Worth and Little Rock Districts, the Air Force Center for Engineering and the Environment, the design firms and construction agents. The Mathis Fitness Center expansion project increases the facility's size by 15,500 sq. feet to a total of 46,200 sq. feet, a 50 percent increase in total facility square footage. This $5.8 million expansion project chips away at the 47,000 sq. feet facility space deficit identified by the 2006 Air Education Training Command Fitness Facility Assessment. Included in this project will be a new multipurpose room to accommodate group physical training space, cardiovascular equipment and a myriad of weight stations. Expansion of the locker rooms, renovation of the lobby area and west entryway, a larger spinning room, relocation of the four tennis courts and upgrades to the facility's systems will also be addressed with this project. Through the combined efforts of the prime contractor and the design firm, the project should be completed on schedule in spring 2011. The $29 million pipeline dormitory construction is a 200 room facility that will adequately house 400 pipeline students. The project coupled with future dormitory projects will eliminate triple bunking and give students the enhanced living conditions that they deserve. Included in the project will be a central corridor dormitory that will mirror nearby building 3139, and will include Military Training Leader offices, new troop walks, pavilions and an energy efficient chiller plant for air conditioning that will service all of the local facilities. This dormitory project has been awarded for construction and design and should be completed by early 2011. The construction should also benefit the San Angelo community as sub-contractors and laborers will have opportunities for employment and material suppliers will be called on to support the contractor's needs. These projects address deficiencies and are architecturally appeasing, state of the art facilities. Team Goodfellow looks forward to the rise of these two great projects from the West Texas soil that base personnel will enjoy and benefit from for years to come.
