The smell of roasted turkey, seasoned stuffing, warm sweet potatoes, pumpkin pies and gathering with family and friends is what the holidays are all about. In past years, local families have invited Goodfellow service members to share in their families' festivities through the 'Home for the Holidays' program.
"This program provides an opportunity for community and military families to adopt Goodfellow service members and welcome them into their homes for both holidays," said Tech. Sgt. Eric Alvarez, 17th Training Group military training leader and this year's Home for the Holidays organizer. "However, in December during exodus, a majority of the students go home for the holidays."
"The service members get to enjoy feasts, laughter and fun who would otherwise spend their time alone or do other things rather than experience these holidays," Sgt. Alverez said.
Goodfellow's Home for the Holidays program has been in existence for almost five years. Participation varies from year to year based on the student load for that year, how well the event is advertised, and how many students are willing to participate. But over the last four years approximately 111-198 students and 32-60 families participated.
"Holiday adoption is truly a Thanksgiving Day and I am grateful we have such an appreciative community of our armed forces. This is the type of community event that makes me proud to put my uniform on every day," said Sgt. Alvarez.
