Rules for privately owned weapons on federal installations Published Nov. 10, 2009 By Capt. James Masoner 17th Security Forces Squadron Commander GOODFELLOW AFB, Texas -- Federal law prohibits the possession of firearms or other dangerous weapons in federal facilities, to include the confines of Goodfellow AFB, by all persons not specifically authorized by 18 U.S.C. 930. A firearm is defined as any weapon designed to expel a projectile through a barrel by the action of a propellant or one that you can readily convert to this purpose (this includes air soft, BB, paintball guns, and similar devices). All personnel residing in billeting and dormitories must store their privately owned weapons (POWs) and ammunition in the 17th Security Forces Squadron armory, Bldg 3323 IAW GAFBI 31-102, paragraph 2.14.6, Installation Security Instruction. Personnel must immediately report to the armory with the weapons and ammunition upon entering the base. Only traditional firearms and ammunition are allowed storage in the armory. Commanders and first sergeants are responsible for providing storage for other dangerous weapons (air soft guns, BB guns, paintball guns, swords, etc). Pinnacle Housing residents may store their POWs in housing, however, they must be registered at the 17 SFS armory (exception: air soft, BB, paintball, etc, do not require registration to be in housing). Only civilian law enforcement officers on official business are authorized to carry firearms onto the base in their vehicle or person. If taking the weapon off base, you may take it immediately from its point of authorized storage out the gate. Upon return, the weapon must be immediately returned to its approved storage location. Privately owned weapons and ammunition are not authorized to be left in a vehicle while on Goodfellow AFB. Violators will be subject to legal action with imprisonment being up to five years. Contact the 17 SFS at 654-5905 if you have any questions.
