Reflective belts and headphone use on perimeter road Published Oct. 23, 2009 By Samuel Spooner 17th Training Wing Safety GOODFELLOW AFB, Texas -- One question frequently received in the 17th Training Wing Safety Office is: "Do I need to have a reflective belt during hours of darkness?" Yes, all personnel should wear reflective belts when exposed to a traffic environment during hours of darkness, periods of reduced visibility, or inclement weather such as fog, rain, sleet and snow to enhance their visibility. Reflective belts are particularly effective for reducing mishaps caused by poor visibility or darkness. A traffic environment is a place where vehicle and pedestrian interaction may occur. For clarification, reflective belts are mandatory when crossing a roadway at a crosswalk where there is no controlled flow of vehicle movement, no stop sign. At all crosswalks on base, a pedestrian should ensure the driver sees and acknowledges his or her presence. Remember, driver distraction is a leading cause of accidents and the driver may or may not recognize your intentions. Once confirmation is made that the driver is aware, go ahead and cross. Perimeter Road PT and Driving Personnel may wear a single bud earpiece while performing PT on the perimeter road. A reflective belt or vest must be worn regardless of attire, to include gear between dusk and dawn. If you are operating a vehicle on perimeter road, headlights must be on regardless of the time of day and you must adhere to the speed limit of 15 mph. Signs will be posted at the entrance to perimeter road as a reminder.
