The final battles of this year's intramural flag football season were waged as the intramural playoffs wind down. As of Wednesday, four of the six playoff teams were still in contention for base bragging rights after the first few rounds of the double-elimination tournament.

The 17th Mission Support Group Junk Yard Dawgs, who have not lost a game this year, and the 1st Responders, last year's base champs, have the inside track to the base championship game, which is scheduled for 6 p.m., Monday. The Junk Yard Dawgs beat the 1st Responders during the regular season.

The top-seeded Junk Yard Dawgs earned a first-round bye in the playoffs, then escaped the 316th Training Squadron Sharks 20-14 in the second round Monday. The second-seeded Responders also earned a first-round bye and a second-round win Monday, a 33-6 rout of Army.

In the first round Sept. 24, the 316 TRS shut out the 17th Training Support Squadron 12-0 and Army knocked off rival Navy/Marines, 27-18. The first-round losses dropped the 17 TRSS and Navy/Marines into the tournament's losers' bracket. They were joined by the 316 TRS and Army after those teams fell in the second round Monday.

Tuesday, the 316 TRS rebounded from their loss the day before by bouncing the Navy/Marines team from the playoffs with a 24-6 victory. Meanwhile, the Army knocked out 17 TRSS, 18-6 to keep its championship hopes alive.

The early exit by the 17 TRSS and Navy/Marines in the playoffs ended a strong run the two teams put together just to make the tournament. The 17 TRSS won three of its final five contests, including a 19-14 win over the 17th Communications Squadron Bats on the final game of the season. Navy/Marines also got hot in the last half of the regular season and made the playoffs by defeating 315 TRS Rattlers 20-18 Sept. 23.
