The Goodfellow Hawks varsity flag football team suffered its first setback of the season, losing to New Era, 20-7 Sunday at Texas Bank Sports Complex in San Angelo.

The Hawks, now 1-1 on the season, are the first Goodfellow varsity flag football team to play in the San Angelo Recreation Open Division, which is part of the Texas Amateur Athletic Federation. The Hawks found themselves in a 7-0 hole in the first half, as New Era connected on a 22-yard scoring play early in the game. They were driving downfield to tie the game when a very unusual play occurred. Quarterback Todd Hadley threw a pass that was intercepted by a New Era defender. The ball thief scampered downfield where he tried to lateral the ball to one of his teammates, but it landed in the arms of Hawks' Jamie Burdette. Burdette then scrambled back to the New Era 20-yard line to give the Hawks a chance to tie the game.

Two plays later, Hadley fired a 20-yard strike to Deion Campbell for a touchdown. Hadley then hit Chance Borgeson for the point-after attempt to knot the game at seven going into halftime.

The Hawks' offense could not get on track in the second half. New Era's did, however, scoring from 25 and 22 yards out to secure the win. The Hawks take on the Texas Fight at 3:30 p.m., Sunday.
