Pedestrian Safety Reminder Published Oct. 2, 2009 By Staff Sgt. James Fountain 17th Training Wing Safety GOODFELLOW AFB, Texas -- Goodfellow AFB has crosswalks on almost every street throughout the base due to heavy pedestrian traffic. There are three new crosswalks which run from the new parking lot on the east side of Kearney to the numbered 500 series school buildings on the west side of Kearney. Although there are reflectors on these crosswalks and pedestrians have the right of way, we ask all pedestrians to assess traffic before entering the crosswalk. As you recall from kindergarten, everyone needs to look both ways before crossing the street. At all crosswalks on base, a pedestrian should ensure the driver sees and acknowledges his or her presence. Remember, driver distraction is a leading cause of accidents and the driver may or may not recognize your intentions. Once confirmation is made that the driver is aware, go ahead and cross. Always use a reflective belt, flashlight, or reflective material during hours of darkness or limited visibility to improve visibility to drivers. As a driver or bicyclist, you have a responsibility to watch for pedestrians. Keep an eye out at all times and drive defensively. This is especially true during high traffic times, such as the morning and late afternoon, when students and employees are arriving or leaving their respective work place. Use common sense, caution and awareness of your surroundings whether you are a bicyclist, motorist or pedestrian. Do not cross unless there is a crosswalk. Can I use headphones while running or walking on base? The local conditions briefing you received when you arrived at Goodfellow AFB states; the use of headphones and/or ear-pieces are only authorized on the track and cross-country trail. Also there are hazards that could be a possible problem for you or others, either in your work place or on the way to work, please let your unit safety representative or the safety office know. Our job as a wingmen is to ensure we help protect each other from mishap situations.
