Goodfellow library celebrates Read-A-New-Book Month Published Sept. 14, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Anne Gathua 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AFB,Texas -- Do you remember the last time you visited the library, explored a new book, checked out a CD, DVD or just browsed through the magazine and newspaper collection? September is the Read-A-New-Book and Library Card Sign-up Month. "This month is observed nationally and is dedicated to promoting the lost art of reading," said Mr. Bruce McLaren, the senior library technician. "I urge everyone to trade in the hours spent watching television and playing video games for the classic pleasure of reading a book. Sure, with the advent of technology, it can be tempting to replace those books with more 'hip' forms of entertainment, but none can compare with the thrill and satisfaction of delving into a book." The Goodfellow library has a myriad of resources including varying assortments of books, foreign language learning materials, educational materials for College Level Exam Preparation tests, resources for different courses offered by local universities and colleges, wireless network, CDs, DVDs, magazines and educational databases. Everyone on base has free access to explore all the resources offered by the library. Books feed everyone's likings, said Mr. McLaren. Reading is not only a great means of entertainment but is also a way to unleash one's imagination. How else can you venture through different time periods, parts of the world, or taste different cultures all in one sitting, he added. "No one is too old or too young to love reading," said Mr. McLaren. "Everyone should start reading a new book this month in order to celebrate the thrill of reading. You can even gift personalized books to friends or family this holiday season. This month is definitely a perfect time to initiate your desire to read more." For anyone curious about the world around them, no matter how old you are, the library is a doorway to discovery, said Mr. McLaren.
