Learning made fun, Children’s Summer Reading Program Published Aug. 24, 2009 By Airman 1st Class Anne Gathua 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AFB, Texas -- Color, pomp and excitement filled the children's room in the Goodfellow Library Aug. 14, as Piccolo the Clown entertained kids with songs, dance and magic tricks marking the end of the Children's Summer Reading Program which was open to kids of all ages. "The purpose of the program is to plant a reading seed in the kids and encourage parents to read to them," explained Mr. Bruce McLaren, the senior library technician. "Having worked in the library business for 47 years, I have learned that the more kids can read at a young age, the more success they're going to have as they go through school." Mr. McLaren said the kids had fun reading on a regular basis and it gave them a chance to check out reading material, hear new stories, do crafts and play games. He said about 60 kids participated this year, which was more than last year. "This year's program was titled 'Reading on the Wild Side,' a ready-made program from The Illinois State Library Association," said Mr. McLaren. "The association provided posters, certificates, ideas and a reference book that helped us put our program together." Mr. McLaren said the kids had a great time and the parents enjoyed it because the sessions were not overly long and they captured the kids' attention and encouraged them to read. Parents who attended the closing event said they thought the program was great and very beneficial. "Mr. McLaren's reading was very comforting for the kids, and they not only enjoyed themselves but learned a lot from the program," said Ms. Rhonda Stagner, a Goodfellow parent. Though the summer program is over, the regular reading program for the base starts Sept. 2, said Mr. McLaren.
