Goodfellow Recreation Camp Gets New Docks Published July 24, 2009 By Scott Jarmon 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AFB, Texas -- The staff at the Goodfellow Recreation Camp are always trying to improve their facilities. Last week, they got what they wanted. The 15 year-old boat docks at the camp have finally been replaced. Last Monday, the deteriorating docks, once the Rec Camp's only means of getting boats into the water, were removed and new, state-of-the-art docks were put in their place. "We wanted a safe place for the military to be able to use their boats." said Harry Gilbert, Rec Camp manager, "The old docks were filling up with water, sinking under people's weight and warping." Although the old docks were worn out after 15 years of use, the new docks, made from a UV protected polythene plastic, are expected to last twice as long. Two more slots for boats were added as well as a new courtesy dock to park larger boats. The construction started July 13 and was completed less than four days later. A ceremony for the new docks was held July 17 at the Rec Camp. Camp staff, wing leadership, and campers gathered around the docks for the dedication. "Without the wing leadership's help, this project would have never happened. I thank them very much for it.", said Harry Gilbert. "Take some time before the summer is over to go down to the Rec Camp and enjoy the new, long-overdue docks."
