Titans clash for Basketball supremacy Published May 7, 2009 By Johnny Bustos 17th Force Support Squadron GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- In Monday-night action April 27 the 315th Training Squadron Sidewinders took the early lead and never looked back, defeating the 17th Communications Squadron COMM Bats 50 to 33. In a thriller, the Army and the 1st Responders pounded each other into overtime where the Army took a one point victory 60 to 59. In other action, the Sidewinders remained undefeated by sweeping the 17th Mission Support Group Junk Yard Dawgs 47 to 43. April 28 the 17 CS B Bats made a game of it for the first half but could not keep pace with the high stepping 315 TRS Rattlers in the second half, losing by a score of 39 to 49. In the second game of the night, the 1st Responders took on the high -flying, high-stepping 316th Training Squadron Sharks, who made short work of the Responders 78 to 43. In the final game of night, the Junk Yard Dawgs and 17 MSG Rottweilers met in the pit to determine who would have bragging rights in the yard. The Rottweilers' bark was worse than their bite and the Junk Yard Dawgs went home with a victory, 58 to 48. April 29 saw a meeting of two winless teams end with one climbing out of the celler. The much-improved Navy/Marine team played a great second half but fell short to the COMM Bats 46 to 38. In the second game, the Sidewinders took on the improving Army team. The Army took a six point lead in the first half but could not hold on as the Sidewinders squeezed a four-point victory 40 to 36. In the final game of the night, the no-show B Bats forfeited to the Rottweilers. April 30, the COMM Bats won their second game of the week and season by defeating the 17th Medical Group Cobras 49 to 43. During the second game, the Army put up 60 points and routed the Navy/Marine team by 21 points. The best two teams in league took to the floor in the last game of the night. The Sharks and the Sidewinders both came to the game boasting 4-0 records. Both teams brought their high-octane offenses, with the Sharks averaging 66 points per game while the Sidewinders averaged 52 points per game. The key to the game was not the offense but defense: both teams held each other well below their game average by playing a grueling defensive game. At the end, the Sharks outscored the Sidewinders 37 to 33 to remain unbeaten and take over the number-one spot in the league.
