Intramural Basketball opens with flurry of games

The 2009 Goodfellow Intramural Basketball season started this week with a 110 game schedule. Games are played Monday through Thursday, three games per night starting at 5:30 p.m. at the Mathis Fitness Center.

On Monday night the 315th Training Squadron Sidewinders found themselves facing the Navy/Marine Corps team.

The Navy/Marine team kept it close in the first half but were eventually overcome by the Sidewinders 53 to 30. In the second game of the night the 316th Training Squadron Sharks played a see saw game against 17th Mission Support Group Rottweilers, with the Sharks taking a 55 to 53 victory.

The final game of the night pitted the 17th Mission Support Group Junk Yard Dawgs against the Army, who fought a good battle but were out-scored 44 to 33 by the Dawgs.

Tuesday night the 1st Responders took on the 17th Medical Group Cobras in the first game of the night. The 1st Responders responded well and kept it close until the Cobras made a late run to defeat them by the score of 54 to 47.

Another close game was in order when the Sharks entertained the Junk Yard Dawgs. The Sharks took an early lead and never looked back. The Sharks upended the Dawgs by a score of 53 to 49.

Two teams from the same squadron met each other for bragging rights when the 17th Communications Squadron COMM Bats played the 17 CS B Bats team. After all was said and done, the COMM Bats won the close game 40 to 35 over the B Bats.

The Sidewinders took an early lead and never looked back on Wednesday night, defeating the Cobras 64 to 48. Next, the Army took the floor against the B Bats and in a close game they defeated them 49 to 45.

In the late game, the 315th Training Squadron Rattlers took an early lead against the Rottweilers but lost by half time. In the last 10 minutes, the Rattlers made a run, but it was too late and the Rottweilers won 47 to 40.

On Thursday, the 1st Responders challenged the COMM Bats in the first game of the night. The score remained close throughout and was decided in the final minute of the game from the charity line, as the 1st Responders squeezed out a 43 to 40 victory over the COMM Bats.

In the second game, the Navy/Marine team was no match for the Cobras as the Cobras took the game by a 53 to 38 score.

The final game of the night and week saw Sharks flex their muscles and down the B Bats by a whopping 77 to 35, remaining undefeated at 3 wins.
