Twenty-two Airmen from the 311th and 314th Training Squadrons participated in the Twelfth Annual U.S. Air Force Marathon Sept. 20 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, Ohio. This is the second year Airmen from Monterey have represented the 17th Training Wing in the Air Force's premier sanctioned athletic event. Team Monterey consisted of both staff and students competing in the full and half marathon events. Travel to and from the race was provided by the 60th Air Mobility Wing, Travis Air Force Base, Calif. via KC-10A Extender. During the four hour sortie, Airmen were treated to a tour of the cockpit and refueling operator's station.

Participants in the U.S. Air Force Marathon earn points for their major command based upon number of runners and finishing times. The MAJCOM with the greatest number of points is awarded the Chief of Staff of the Air Force Commander's Cup at Fall CORONA. Air Education and Training Command won the inaugural CSAF Cup in 2007, in part based upon the outstanding results of the 17th Training Wing.

This year two 311th Training Squadron Airmen earned top honors in their event. Airman 1st Class Carissa Skrivanek, an Arabic linguist, finished thirty-eighth in the half-marathon, third in the female category and second in her age division with a time of 1:39:23. Airman 1st Class Ivan Alvarado, a Hebrew linguist attached to the 316th Training Squadron and returning team member, finished fourth in the half-marathon, fourth in the male category and second in his age division with a time of 1:15:33.

Following the race, Airmen toured the National Museum of the United States Air Force and had an up-close look at the F-22 Raptor that performed the opening ceremony fly-by. Overnight stays at Travis and Wright-Patterson provided an immersion in Air Force culture for students who typically spend 6 - 20 months on an Army Post learning foreign language skills.
