Goodfellow athletes braved the West Texas heat Saturday to compete in the 2008 Goodfellow Triathlon.

The event, organized by the Mathis Fitness Center, consisted of a 1,000-meter swim, a 3.2-mile run, and finished with a 6-mile bike.

Ten teams of three and 30 individuals competed in this year's event for a total of 60 participants - an improvement on last year's turnout.

First-place finishers for the 2008 Goodfellow Triathlon included 1st Place Male (59:42) Chris Passmore, 1st Place Female (1:12:00) Sara Sullivan, and 1st Place Team (55:50)
Ken Cawthon, Ben Cully and Jesus Villafn.

First-place finishers all received medals and a triathlon champion tshirt; second place finishers were awarded medals. Gatorade, which sponsored the event, provided all
participants with water bottles; participants also received Mathis Fitness Center t-shirts.

Colonel Richard Ayres, 17th Training Wing commander, presided over the awards ceremony held on the perimeter road. Colonel Ayres thanked the participants, fitness
staff, and volunteers for making the event such a success. Alyse Herndon, Special Events Coordinator for the Mathis Center and triathlon organizer, echoed appreciative sentiments.

"We could not have put this event on without the extensive help from base volunteers...they were awesome," she said. Volunteers from around the base helped with tracking laps and times, guide participants on the course, and keeping the athletes hydrated.
