Safety office institutes new awards program Published June 17, 2008 By Senior Airman Stephen Musal 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- With Team Goodfellow, as well as the rest of Air Education and Training Command, well into the 101 Critical Days of Summer, the 17th Training?Wing Safety Office has instituted a new safety awards program. Designed to recognize individual acts of safety awareness and accident prevention, the award is a challenge coin unique to Goodfellow Air Force Base and numbered. "We're trying to encourage Goodfellow's Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines not only to be safe, but to actively encourage safety in others," said Robert Clapp, chief of safety for the 17 TRW. The first Team Goodfellow member to receive the award was Lt. Col. Shawn Moore, 312th Training Squadorn commander, for sharing his own squadron's emphasis on safety with the base and AETC, via his "Remember the three Ds" commentary. The challenge coin is a tradition dating back to at least World War I, depending on the story. Today, challenge coins like the Airman's Coin or unit coins are given to military members for many reasons: when joining some new squadrons, to commemorate special events or, like this coin, as awards.
