The 311th Training Squadron promoted one of its members to the highest enlisted rank, chief master sergeant, April 30 at the Presidio of Monterey, Calif.

Senior Master Sergeant Steven T. Davison was promoted to the rank of chief master sergeant.

Chief Master Sgt. Davison is currently the senior military training leader and squadron superintendent of the 311 TRS. He has remained on active duty for the past 26 years and has held 3 different AFSCs.

Chief Davison entered the Air Force as an aircraft crew chief and spent his first 12 years maintaining T-38, A-10, and C-130 aircraft. He re-trained as a flight engineer and has logged 3,000 hours of flight time on the EC-130 and KC-10 aircraft. In September 2005, Chief Davison was selected for special duty as a military training leader at the Presidio of Monterey. He earned honors as Goodfellow Air Force Base 17th Training Group Senior Non-Commissioned Officer of the Year for 2006. Additionally, he was selected as Air Education and Training Command and U.S. Air Force Senior Military Training Leader of the Year.

Chief master sergeants are selected once per year by a promotion board. The board president is always a general officer, and each panel consists of two chief master sergeants and one colonel. They examine the promotion records, and score them by considering the following factors: performance, professional competence, leadership, job responsibility, breadth of experience, specific achievements and education. The Air Force limits personnel in the grade of chief master sergeant to one percent of the enlisted force.
