“Firedawg” selected for AECP Published May 16, 2008 By Senior Airman Stephen Musal 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- In a reversal of roles, one of Goodfellow's fire instructors will find himself a student this coming fall. Staff Sgt. Jeremy Miller, a fire ground operations instructor with the 312th Training Squadron, was selected for the Airmen Education and Commissioning Program May 9. Sergeant Miller, a Bayou La Batre, Ala., native, will continue attending Angelo State University as a student in the Nursing program, as well as exchanging his active-duty uniform for Reserve Officer Training Corps BDUs as part of Air Force ROTC Detachment 847. "This is something I've wanted for four years," Sergeant Miller said, adding that in addition to serving the Air Force as an officer, the transition will be beneficial to his family. "I spent the first year of my kids' lives in the hospital, feeling helpless because I didn't know what was wrong or how to fix it," he said. As a nurse, he hopes to be able to better support his family. The fire instructor added his excitement about his soon-to-be new job. "Medical is a great career field to get into," he said, "and ASU has one of the best programs in Texas." Sergeant Miller's commander, Lt. Col. Shawn Moore, surprised him with the news while he was instructing his class. "Needless to say, I'm extremely proud of Sergeant Miller's drive and professional commitment to serve and protect others," Lt. Col. Moore said. "I'm absolutely confident that his "Firedawg" emergency reponse roots, leadership and spirit will help fuel and ensure his success as a future nurse and valuable officer in our United States Air Force." That drive is evident in Sergeant Miller's advice to anyone following in his footsteps. "Set your goals and go for them," the officer-to-be said. "Don't let anything get in your way."
