17 TRW beats 316 TRS Sharks in Over-30 Basketball League title Published Feb. 22, 2008 By Senior Airman Luis Loza Gutierrez 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 17th Training Wing staff defeated the 316th Training Squadron Sharks 63 to 58 to win the Over-30 Basketball League Championship. The title game took place Feb. 13 at the Mathis Fitness Center, and was hosted by the 17th Services Division and the Mathis Fitness Center staff. "I guess the biggest challenge of the game for us was maintaining the lead during the final minutes of the game," said wing staff power forward John Garrett, who is better known by his teammates and fans as "Doc." The Sharks led 32 to 30 at the end of the first 20-minute half. The teams exchanged leads 4 times in the second half, but the wing staff began to break away in the final 7 minutes. The Sharks tried going with a full court press on defense, hoping to force overtime by sending the wing staffers to the foul line. The strategy appeared not to work as the wing staff sank 13 of 16 free throws in the second half. Sharks forward No. 14, Jonathan Session, scored a game-high 21 points. Center Joseph Baldwin had the hot hand for the wing staff with 17 points.
