Sailors commemorate Navy birthday Published Nov. 1, 2007 By Airman 1st Class Stephen Musal Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- If you didn't know there was a Naval vessel named after Tom Green County, Wednesday was your chance to learn something new as retired Sailors from the USS Tom Green County joined Sailors of the Center for Information Dominance Detachment to celebrate the Navy's 232nd birthday. The USS Tom Green County was commissioned Sept. 12, 1953 and served the Navy until its transfer to Spain, Jan. 5, 1972. The vessel, a tank landing ship, carried Marines, Soldiers and members of allied nations to and from the shores of Vietnam during the Vietnam conflict. "We have people here who put this ship into commission and people who took it out of commission," said Bill Haack, who was a Seaman serving as a gunner's mate during his time on the Tom Green County. Also in attendance was former Petty Officer 3rd Class Roy McCord, a Silver Star Recipient. Though Petty Officer McCord received his Silver Star for actions after his tour on the Tom Green County, "he was one of ours, he came from us and we are proud of him," said Mr. Haack. During the celebration Wednesday, former crewmates mingled with current Sailors, shared stories and toasted the rich history of the Navy - and the future. 'There's nothing better than drinking Navy coffee and watching the sun come up over a calm sea," said Mr. Haack.
