Richard Ayres 17th Training Wing commander GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Two decades ago, President Ronald Reagan, speaking at a memorial ceremony, reminded us that "those who died in defense of our country were boys when they died, and they gave up two lives - the one they were living, and the one they would have lived. They gave up their chance to be husbands and fathers and grandfathers. They gave up everything for their country, for us. All we can do is remember." Team Goodfellow, remembering is what National Prisoner of War / Missing in Action Recognition Day is all about. It is a time to remember. It is a time to remember the faces of the prisoners of war, of those who endured extreme hardship and the denial of liberty. It is also a time to remember those Americans still missing, and to recommit to achieving the fullest possible accounting of their fate. This past Friday and Saturday, Team Goodfellow conducted a POW/MIA Vigil to pay tribute to our past prisoners of war and to remember our fellow warriors still unaccounted for from past conflicts. I would like to take this occasion publicly to thank the 99 men and women who gave freely of their time to stand in the west Texas heat and make our Vigil possible. That speaks highly of them, professionally and personally. It says that they understand how incredibly important it is that we honor those who endured captivity and that we keep faith with our fellow warriors and the families of our fellow warriors who have not yet come home. Four of our young men and women deserve special mention. When their relief party failed to arrive as scheduled, Tech. Sgt. Shannon Ivins, Staff Sgt. Syema Sinclair, Airman 1st Class Tyler Biscoe and Airman 1st Class Pablo Zarate did not relinquish their posts but continued to pay tribute without complaint for more than two hours rather than allow the vigil to be interrupted.
