DYESS AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Honorary commanders from the 17th Training Wing at Goodfellow Air Force Base visited Dyess Air Force Base, August 6.
The 7th Bomb Wing welcomed community leaders and influencers for the 3rd Quarter Honorary Commander Civic Leader Event, offering an exclusive, behind-the-scenes look at the missions and capabilities of both the 7th Bomb Wing and the 317th Airlift Wing.
This immersive event was designed to strengthen community relationships and provide honorary commanders with firsthand insights into the diverse operations that drive Dyess AFB’s continued success.
The day began with a visit to the 7th Munitions Squadron, where participants received a detailed briefing on the assembly of inert GBU-31 munitions. The honorary commanders had the opportunity to help build training munitions themselves—gaining a new appreciation for the precision and expertise required in munitions handling.
The group then toured the 317th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, where they explored various aspects of aircrew safety and maintenance support. Highlights included hands-on demonstrations with parachute packing, night vision goggles, aircrew helmets, and personal flotation devices. Many participants tried on gear and engaged directly with the equipment used to ensure mission success and aircrew safety.
By engaging with these civic leaders, Goodfellow and Dyess AFB continues to foster mutual understanding and appreciation between its Airmen and the broader community. The Honorary Commander Program remains a vital initiative in building strong partnerships and reinforcing community support for the missions of the 17 TRW, 7 BW and 317 AW.
