During the 2025 promotion cycle, 640 of 2,445 senior master sergeants were selected for promotion to chief master sergeant, representing a 26.18% selection rate across the Air Force. The 17th Training Wing announced the selection of two members advancing to the top 1% of the enlisted force on Jan. 6, 2026.

President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed Public Law 85-422 on May 20, 1958, officially establishing the ranks of senior master sergeant and chief master sergeant. Promotion to chief master sergeant signifies an enlisted member has reached the pinnacle of the enlisted force and now bears responsibility for translating senior leaders’ guidance into actionable tasks while developing and mentoring the next generation of Airmen.
