Commercial vendors are selling some protein bar products that contain hemp seeds, a prohibited substance for military members.  The Air Force prohibits military members from ingesting any product that contains or derives from hemp seed or hemp oil to help ensure military readiness.  Air Force Instruction 90-507, Military Drug Demand Reduction Program, paragraph 1.1.6 states that studies have shown that products made with hemp seed and hemp oil may contain varying levels of THC, which is an active ingredient of marijuana and is detectable under the Air Force Drug Testing Program.

While the THC levels in these products may vary and the member's risk of testing positive through urinalysis from eating these protein bars is low, the underlying premise behind the Air Force's blanket prohibition on ingesting hemp seed products remains the same.  Military members should read product labels to check for hemp seed or hemp oil prior to consumption and be vigilant about what they put into their bodies.

Military members who fail to comply with AFI 90-507 may face charges under the Uniform Code of Military Justice, Article 92. Violations may result in administrative disciplinary action without regard to otherwise applicable criminal or civil sanctions for violations of related laws.
