The Goodfellow Youth Center selected Sophia A. Robinson, Robert E. Lee Middle School student and Goodfellow teen, as the base's Youth of the Year.

To be nominated, a youth must receive a Youth of the Quarter award, complete the Youth of the Year portfolio and be an active member in the Youth Programs.

"While all of our youth enjoy being in our program and partaking in our numerous activities, Sophia also shows leadership qualities in many facets of our program," said Brian A. Stansbury, 17th Force Support Squadron Youth Programs teen coordinator. "She goes out of her way to get other younger youth involved. She tries to make sure everyone is included, whether it is during a discussion on the planning of upcoming activities for our teens or a game of volleyball in our gym, she will be sure everyone gets a chance to play or speak."

On top of being involved in the Youth Programs, Sophia also volunteers on and off base.

"Sometimes I help out on Sundays with my church's children church, and I went on the mission trip this summer," she said. "Here I've done the Santa's Market, Month of the Military Child and helped with the lock-ins."

Sophia said that she hopes this award will help her with the future.

"I'm going to be applying for space camp this summer, and this will look really good on my resume," she said. "It's a good accomplishment; it would look good on college applications."

Currently Sophia said she sees herself becoming an engineer or in a mathematics and science career.

Now that Sophia has secured her place as the Goodfellow Youth of the Year she is competing at the state level against other Defense Department children for Texas Youth of the Military.
