The Event Center's Neon Cactus Bar hosted a competition to see who could come up with the best idea for a bar renovation Dec. 17.

The idea for the event came from the need to update the bar area in conjunction with other Event Center renovations.

"Leadership came to me and said 'we need to come up with some kind of bar rescue plan,'" said Shandy L. Scott, 17th Force Support Squadron event programmer. "I was excited to help out in any way I could."

Contestants presented their ideas for the new bar, ranging from western to modernist themes, to a panel, which  included Chief Master Sgt. Thomas F. Good, 17th Training Wing Command Chief, and Col. Kimberly P. Joos, 17th TRW Commander.

Members in their early 20s are the largest customer demographic for the bar, making them a high priority when considering the renovations.

"I think the bar should be done in a theme that would not only attract them but also keep our heritage," said Jason R. Walker, 17th FSS Neon Cactus bartender, during his presentation.

The winner will be announced during the Exodus Welcome Back Party at the Neon Cactus starting at 4:40 p.m. Jan 9.  The party starts at 4:30 p.m.
