1st Sgt Operation Warmheart provides 172 turkey packages Published Nov. 26, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Scott Jackson 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- First sergeants and other Goodfellow members prepared 172 boxes of food at the Commissary for Operation Warmheart, a program to give service members a Thanksgiving meal Nov. 25. Diamond wearers created this program to help cut spending for Airmen during the holiday season. "Through our Thanksgiving and Christmas basket builds and our amazing partnership with the Base Commissary, we have a venue to provide Thanksgiving and Christmas meals for our Team Goodfellow personnel," said Senior Master Sgt. Hamp Lee III, 316th Training Squadron first sergeant. "Our Thanksgiving and Christmas basket builds are our major annual events and the ones most base personnel identify with Operation Warmheart." With some Airmen away from their families, the base comes together. "I think events like this are important," said Airman 1st Class Samantha L. Friedman, 17th Training Wing Legal Office paralegal apprentice. "Some Airmen don't have the opportunity to go home and see their families, like me, so it just helps out and makes the holidays a bit easier." Above all, the event is rooted in the spirit of giving. "I absolutely love giving," said Lee. "I believe giving is an extension of compassion that improves our humanity and inspires the heart. As we consider the needs of our neighbors, we increase opportunities to give thanks and improve our community as a whole."
