Veterans Day tradition Published Nov. 14, 2014 By Staff Sgt. Austin Knox 17th Training Wing Public Affairs MILLERSVIEW, Texas -- Goodfellow Air Force Base service members joined the Millersview community located 40 miles east of San Angelo for their annual Veterans Day celebration in the former school gymnasium Nov. 11. The Goodfellow AFB Joint Service Color Guard and the Goodfellow active duty singing group, Patriotic Blue, participated in the ceremony honoring veterans -- a tradition in Millersview since 1919. Chief Master Sgt. Thomas F. Good, 17th Training Wing Command Chief, also participated in the event as a guest speaker focusing on the importance of community. "The legacy of our Americans is proud," said Good. "It is honorable, and no matter where you are or what you did to serve, we serve today together. We do this together as a community." Good went on to say, "our veterans today need each and every one of us tomorrow, to stand up, step in, and never ever forget the true gift that we have to be here." Millersview has a population of 75 and has come together every year excluding one year in the 1940's when the town flooded. "With one exception, that record remains unbroken," said Steve Grounds, event director. "For years, it was a traditional barbeque with local ranchers donating meat and their wives providing all the trimmings. This tradition lives on today with brisket cooked by many of the same local ranchers and trimmings provided by the same wives." Traditions run deep in the community that is proud to celebrate their tribute to the nation's veterans on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. Grounds stated, "there are celebrations much larger but none more patriotic."
