The Great American Smokeout is an opportunity for smokers to quit smoking for 24 hours Nov. 20.

Military service members, retirees and dependents who smoke are asked to quit smoking to protect family, friends, children and pets from the harmful effects of secondhand.

Secondhand smoke is especially harmful to young children and is linked to lower respiratory infections in infants and children under 18 months of age. Pregnant women exposed to secondhand smoke are more likely to have low-birth weight babies and children are at increased risk of sudden infant death syndrome.

Secondhand smoke also affects pets giving them an increased risk of lung and nose cancer and they are more susceptible to allergies and respiratory infections in smoking households.

The most effective way to reduce harm of secondhand smoke is to quit smoking. Commit to quit Thursday, Nov. 20.
