Nonprofit organizations from the local community collected 783 volunteer signatures from 1,471 attendees during the biannual Volunteer Fair at the Carswell Field House Oct. 30.

Throughout the year, service members get involved with the community by volunteering for organizations such as Meals for the Elderly, Critter Shack and Team Red, White and Blue.

"[The Volunteer Fair] gets the information about organizations that people don't know about out to the public," said Army Sgt. 1st Class Eric M. Murray, 344th Military Intelligence Battalion course supervisor and Team Red, White and Blue representative. "Even I have walked around here and seen a lot of things I didn't know about."

The Volunteer Fair gives service members the chance to browse through a myriad of opportunities to support the community.

"It's a great way to find the things that you are interested in," said Col. Kimberlee P. Joos, 17th Training Wing Commander. "You can come through here and spend 15 minutes; put your name down, and then, you can give as much or as little time as you're able to, but it's a great way to make that connection."

The fair was part of Wingman Week - an effort to build resilience by focusing on the mental pillar of Comprehensive Airman Fitness.

"Today's fair ties in nicely with the mental pillar's element of awareness based on one's ability to seek out what our community needs from us and make the positive choice in paying it forward," said David F. Sullins, 17th TRW installation resilience program specialist.

The Volunteer Fair is planned to coincide with Wingman Day. The Airman and Family Readiness Center maintains a list of community volunteer opportunities, which can be found on the Goodfellow website under the "Volunteer Opportunities" page.
