Glenmore Elementary students honor military members Published Oct. 2, 2014 By 17th Training Wing Public Affairs SAN ANGELO, Texas -- The Goodfellow Air Force Base school liaison officer, Debra L. Scougall, was invited to Glenmore Elementary School to view their handmade "Hero Quilt" created to honor military members Sept. 25. Nicole Smith, Glenmore Elementary School librarian, taught first through fifth grade students about 9/11. Nicole's husband, a former fire instructor at Goodfellow, felt compelled to join the military shortly after the attacks of 9/11. She asked the students to decorate squares of colored construction paper with pictures and messages to military members. She then placed them on the wall to create a quilt. When Scougall arrived, she was greeted by five children of Active Duty military members. She asked them to describe what a hero is to them. "Brave!" exclaimed Jonas B. "Strong," replied Harrison H. "Protective," added Justin R. The children felt proud of their quilt and happy to share it. Some of their artwork included encouraging words such as: "Dear Hero, thank you for your acts of bravery, the whole U.S. thanks you." "A Hero is brave and a hero never gives up and a hero is responsible." "Dear Hero, thank you for fighting for our country. Thank you for protecting us." Scougall was very impressed at their hard work and the compassion they felt toward those who serve. "It means a lot to our military members to have this type of support and encouragement from the local schools and community at large," said Scougall. "I can't thank them enough for all they do for us." Before leaving, she asked the students if they have any advice for military members. "Be safe," responded Ryan G. "Be ready," advised Alexandria T. The "Hero Quilt" will be on display until mid-October at the Glenmore Elementary School.
