Five categories made up the competition; open ranks, regulation, individual, exhibition and spirit. This competition was the first to include the Marine detachment. "It was a little nerve-racking, but it was pretty fun trying to put together a routine for the exhibition," said Marine Corps Pfc. Gideon B. Gaiter, Marine Corps Detachment student. The Marine detachment and the 312th, 315th, and 316th Training Squadrons performed their routines for each category. Judges then scored them based on a point deduction system. "I think it was a great performance," said Senior Master Sgt. Hamp Lee, 316th TRS first sergeant. "You can see the effort that was put in [by] each and every group. Even though there was one winner, everyone performed really well." At the end of the competition, the winners for each category were announced: · Open ranks - 316th TRS · Spirit Award - 312th TRS · Regulation drill - Marine detachment · Exhibition drill - 315th TRS · Overall Award - 315th TRS "I was a little nervous to begin with," said Airman Whitnye Kerns, 315th TRS student and black rope commander. "When they called our flight out [as the winner], I couldn't have been more proud." Kerns said her team dedicated 60 to 100 hours of drill practice toward the competition. "We'll keep doing what we're doing," added Kerns. "It's working!"
