Goodfellow youths learn PCS coping skills through VBS Published Aug. 6, 2014 By Senior Airman Joshua Edwards 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The Taylor Chapel hosted the God in my Backpack Vacation Bible School for children 6 to 12 years old at the base chapel during the months of June and July. This year's theme is about teaching children to cope with a permanent change of station and that God will be with them anywhere in the world. To reach the children, the chapel tried a new approach and made a six week long VBS that met on Thursdays. "This year, instead of the traditional one week long VBS that everyone in the community is doing, we looked at the needs of our kids and decided to provide something special," said Patti O. Bohnsack, Taylor Chapel Protestant ministry coordinator. "The kids on the base can go to any VBS in town, but this is the only one where they are going to get spiritual resiliency as far as being a military kid." A different chaplain or chaplain select taught a new subject each week to include trust, faith, love, fear, friendship and purpose. "It's neat to identify with the military children," said 2nd Lt. Daniel C. Wilton, 17th Training Wing chaplain candidate. "Hopefully at an early age they understand that they might move away from close friends and that it doesn't mean they can't continue being a friend." During the VBS, the children learned several Bible stories, danced, sang and participated in various other activities. "I had fun at the Vacation Bible School," said Bree N. Lee, VBS participant. "I made a lot of friends here."
