Goodfellow Air Force Base and the city of San Angelo worked together in a joint training exercise at Mathis Field July 31.

The training exercise, named Scarlet Hawk 1403, was a simulated military vs civilian aircraft collision that resulted in 52 casualties.

The goal of the exercise was to test response times for Goodfellow, city agencies and airport officials.

"This is very important because it helps us establish what we can do and lets us see what we need to improve on, especially in the communication side," said Luis Elguezabal, Airport Director. "That's one of the things that we were looking at today ... how long does it take for the responding agencies to get here."

By doing the training exercise together, Goodfellow and the other agencies strengthened their cooperation skills so they can operate seamlessly in the event of a real emergency.

"In this case, the military has their protocols; the civilian world has our protocols, and we've got to be able to mesh those together so that they work smoothly," said Steve Mild, Emergency Management Coordinator.

After the exercise, Goodfellow and the other agencies discussed what went well and decided if anything needs to change in the emergency plan.

"From what I saw everything went smoothly," said Elguezabal. "We had good communications; we had good cooperation between all the agencies."
