Critical Days of Summer: Be safe this Independence Day Published June 23, 2014 By Tech. Sgt. James Fountain 17th Training Wing Safety Office GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Patriotism, celebration and fun all wrapped in one weekend, but it's only fun if no injuries occur, otherwise there could be regret. Here are simple guidelines to assist in having a safe Independence Day weekend. Beat the heat If out in the sun, wear sunscreen. The sun protection factor should be a minimum of 25 and sunscreen should not be over 1 year old. Keep hydrated and be alert for symptoms of heat stress. Activities Plan accordingly for camping to include tents, food temperatures, insects and allergies. If you choose activities such as hiking, ensure others know location or route. If applicable, suggest GPS. If driving, plan the route and be well rested. Boating requires driving; drinking and driving rules apply on the water. If swimming in an unknown area, use extra caution for rocks and critters. Barbecuing has a history of safety issues too. A burning fire should only be used outdoor and away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. Another hazard is fireworks, during this particular holiday. Fireworks should be used by adults or under adult supervision. Fireworks can be extremely dangerous if not used correctly. Read the warning labels, and do not tolerate horseplay while using fireworks. Use fireworks in approved locations and away from buildings. According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2012, U.S. hospital emergency rooms saw an estimated 8,700 people for firework-related injuries. Almost three out of five of the 2012 firework injuries were burns, while almost one-fifth were contusions or lacerations. Three out of 10 people injured by fireworks were under the age of 15. Using proper risk management can avoid unneeded mishaps from occurring. Think about all possible scenarios prior to engaging in activities that could become hazardous.
