Col. Kimberlee J. Joos, 17th Training Wing Commander, signed a memorandum, earlier this year, stating that Team Goodfellow members need to reduce energy used on base.

The commander's interest in energy conservation is to help minimize Goodfellow's energy footprint and in turn conserve tax payer dollars.

"It is our responsibility to be good stewards of energy resources," said Joos. "Each of us can make a difference by thoughtful use of electricity, natural gas and water in our everyday activities."

The recent Energy Environmental Safety and Occupational Health Council meeting highlighted potential wing-wide energy savings exceeding $100,000 per year if all non-break room appliances were unplugged when possible.

"Energy conservation is not just about saving money," said Mary C. Lumsdon, 17th Civil Engineer Squadron base energy manager. "We are required by Executive Order 13423 to reduce our energy consumption; it's based on FY03's baseline."

With the summer months arriving, peak shaving is in place when the temperature reaches 95 degrees. Lumsdon encourages Team Goodfellow members to shut off lights, coffee pots, radios and fans, computer monitors, appliances when not in use.

In addition to peak shaving, another way the Air Force is saving money is through the Make Every Dollar Count Campaign.

The Make Every Dollar Count Campaign is a new cultural initiative that is intended to encourage Airmen to share their innovative and money-saving efficiency changes that save the Air Force millions of dollars.

"As you know, there are consequences of this fiscal climate we cannot change, but we must do our very best to improve the things we can and ensure we are good stewards of every taxpayer dollar," said Deborah Lee James, Secretary of the Air Force. "Let's all take ownership - each Active Duty, Reserve, Guard and civilian Airman - to improve what we can control and to Make Every Dollar Count."
