312th TRS remembers fallen firefighters Published May 6, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Breonna Veal 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 312th Training Squadron held a memorial service at the Department of Defense Fallen Firefighters Memorial for three deceased firefighters here May 2. The firefighters' names added to the memorial are: Assistant Chief Edward C. Vanner, Jr., Quonset Air National Guard Base Rhode Island 143rd Fire and Emergency Service, Master Sgt. Kevin L. Johnson, Mississippi Air National Guard, and Air Force Sgt. John H. Vincent, March Air Force Base California 22nd Bombardment Wing, who lost their lives in 2013, 2012 and 1974 respectfully. "Today, we gather to honor, remember and celebrate the memory and dedication of three DOD firefighters who died in the line of duty," said Tech. Sgt. John J. Deese, 312th TRS instructor. "Until today, these brave men were just memories in the minds of the families and friends of these fallen heroes." The DOD Fallen Firefighter Memorial consists of a rock and plaque, listing the names of the other DOD firefighters who have lost their lives. During the ceremony, Lt. Col. Derek R. Ferland, 312th TRS Commander and Chief Master Sgt. Albert L. Sisco Jr., 312th TRS superintendent, placed a wreath in front of the memorial. After the wreath laying, there was a moment of silence to reflect on the firefighters who lost their lives. Following the moment of silence, Ferland shared a few words reflecting on the influence and responsibility of a fireman's duty. "This memorial provides our students with the lineage of the bravery and the courage of their ancestors in the fire service," said Ferland. "It also reminds them of what might await them when they perform their duties and provide service to our great nation."
