SAN ANGELO, Texas -- To help play their part in Goodfellow's Earth Week Celebration, the 17th Mission Support Group planted a cedar elm tree during a xeriscaping event in off base housing April 23.
Xeriscaping is landscaping using native plant or tree species to help limit the amount of water and pesticide usage.
"Trees are essential to our environmental sustainability," said Col. Dominic J. Bernardi, 17th MSG Commander. "They help filter out air pollutants, generate shade and provide homes to numerous animals and insects crucial to the sustainable environmental circle."
This year, the Air Force Earth Day activities primarily focused on sustainability.
"Sustainability is promoting a long-term balance with the environment by not depleting natural resources and using less than you take in," said Arthur T. Silver, 17th Civil Engineer Squadron base environmental coordinator.
