Batter up! Mathis hosts home run derby competition Published April 23, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Devin Boyer 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 17th Force Support Squadron hosted a home run derby competition to build camaraderie at the Mathis Fitness Center multipurpose field for here April 19. "The overall goal for the home run derby is to increase participation in morale boosting events where there is friendly competition and fun," said Diamond A. McClendon, 17th Force Support Squadron special events coordinator. "Events like this are stress relievers and build good relationships between all branches of service." Master Sgt. John E. Gregg, 17th Medical Group unit training manager, found the derby to be beneficial. "We're trying to recruit people for the base team, and this is a good way for us to reach out," said Gregg. Each player received 10 pitches to hit as many home runs as they could. "I think [this home run derby] is well-ran," added Gregg. "I've played a lot of home run derbies, and the formats are all over the place, but this one is pretty straight forward and easy to follow." The derby consisted of two rounds, a preliminary round and a final round. The player with the most home runs in the final round claimed first place. Staff Sgt. Robert Pierson, 316th Training Squadron student, won first place with seven home runs in the final round earning him a softball bat, a batting glove and a gift card to a local sports store. This derby offered more than just recreation. "I've done other home run derbies at bases I've been to, but this one had food and prizes," said Pierson. "Normally, all you get is bragging rights." He also recommends coming out for the next home run derby in April 2015. "It's a fun break from everyone's busy schedules," added Pierson. "Even if you're not a softball player, just come out. It's a lot of fun." The Mathis Fitness Center regularly hosts sporting events throughout each month. For more information on upcoming events, call 325-654-3242.
