Ribbon cutting and softball tournament opens multipurpose field Published April 7, 2014 By Senior Airman Michael Smith 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- The 17th Mission Support Group hosted a one-pitch softball tournament to celebrate the opening of the Mathis Fitness Center multipurpose field here March 21. The field officially opened here Feb. 21 with a ribbon cutting ceremony by Col. Kimberlee P. Joos, 17th Training Wing Commander, providing another physical fitness area for all base members to conduct physical training. The Office of the Secretary of Defense Fitness Program funded the multipurpose field in 2012, with residual funds from the drawdown of overseas troops, which was used to meet Department of Defense wellness initiatives. The money was used to add a turf surface to the field alleviating safety concerns associated with holes created by local pests and aids the base in achieving water reduction goals. "I loved playing softball on the new field," said Senior Airman Ryan E. Keller, 17th Contracting Squadron contract administrator and softball team member. "They put a lot of time, effort and money into this field; it's a lot better than what we've had in years past." According to Mary C. Lumsdon, 17th Civil Engineer Squadron base energy manager, the old field was dried out and dead, which produced a lot of mud when precipitation occurred. The purpose of the artificial turf is to assist in poor conditions, save water and make the area more attractive. "With the turf, we have removed many safety concerns and reduced water consumption," said Johnny J. Bustos, 17th Force Support Squadron sports director. "Now, the field is available for year-round usage as an additional physical fitness area for all assigned services to meet and conduct physical training." Units can call the Mathis Fitness Center at 365-654-3242 to make a reservation 24 hours in advance. The field is limited to a one-hour time limit during daylight hours, unless reserving the field for unit special events, e.g., sports day.
