Stay Humbles take home March Madness championship Published March 27, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Erica Rodriguez 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Fourteen teams showed up to compete for the title of 2014 Goodfellow March Madness Champions during a double elimination 3-on-3 basketball tourney at the Mathis Fitness Center here March 22. Competing teams played to 21 points or until the 15-minute clock ran out and the winner moved on to the next round. Some players came out to unwind from the work week. "Basketball for me is therapy," said Staff Sgt. Sharad K. White, 17th Communications Squadron radio frequency section chief and Stay Humbles team member. "I refer to it as hoop therapy; some people meditate, some people play video games, and some people talk to their chaplain; basketball is my therapy. Overall, I would like to thank the gym staff for putting on a fun but competitive basketball tournament. They could've canceled it due to one of the goals being broken, but they adapted to the situation and overcame it." In the final round, team Stay Humbles, composed of 17th CS and San Angelo community members, and team Freed Boosie, players assigned to the Army 344th Military Intelligence Battalion, faced off in hopes of winning. After a grueling 15 minutes, team Stay Humbles took home the championship with a score of 19-17, along with T-shirts and Academy Sports gift cards. "We host these events for the Goodfellow community to bring a sense of belonging, especially for the students so, that they know they don't have to be stuck in their rooms," said Diamond A. McClendon, Mathis Fitness Center recreational assistant aide. "The Force Support Squadron hosts several different events to boost morale and provide everyone an alternative."
