SARC hosts dodgeball tournament Published March 20, 2014 By Staff Sgt. Laura R. McFarlane 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- More than 240 Goodfellow members came out to cheer on their teams and support the Sexual Assault Prevention and Response dodgeball tournament here March 1. Twenty-eight teams competed in single round eliminations until two teams were left. Col. Thomas Schmidt, 17th Training Wing Vice Commander, spoke before the games began and reinforced the true purpose of the event. "Let's take a second to think about why we're here; we're here for sexual assault awareness," said Schmidt. "Next month ... is going to be Sexual Assault Awareness Month, so this is a perfect lead into the spring season for us to think about sexual assault and what we can do collectively to help combat it." Global Gym, 316th Training Squadron members, competed against the Ochos, Navy Center for Information Dominance Detachment members, in a three-round, best two out of three with Global Gym taking the win. Global Gym's Airman 1st Class Matthew Palmer participated in the dodgeball tournament to help get the word out. "If you want to get a point across, you can't get it out to 10 people and expect the whole base to know," he said. "Get it out to 240 people and they're gonna know." The competition increased awareness of sexual assault, but the goal is to end sexual assault. "We also wanted to reiterate the importance of working together as a team to stop and prevent sexual assault from happening," said Donna Casey, 17th TRW Sexual Assault and Response Coordinator. The next Sexual Assault Awareness Month event is the SARC Challenge April 26. Teams of two can register with the SARC office at 325-654-1559.
