Civil Engineers installed four emergency call boxes on Perimeter Road in the past month to use in emergency situations here and officially activated March 6.

These solar-powered, stand-alone emergency call boxes were funded through the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator Office to enhance the safety and security of personnel completing physical fitness activities on Perimeter Road. The 17th Civil Engineer Squadron installed the call boxes and, thus, reduced costs associated with the purchase. The base saved additional costs by having the 17th Communications Squadron ensure the call boxes used worked the existing communications infrastructure.

"As a joint effort between the 17th Training Wing Safety Office, the SARC and the 17th CS, the call boxes were installed to provide a way for personnel to reach emergency services personnel in the event someone was injured, assaulted, threatened or involved in a medical emergency," said Samuel Spooner, 17th TRW Safety Chief.

Anyone using Perimeter Road will have access to the call boxes.

When a victim is in need, they don't need to memorize numbers. They can simply push a button on the box, and it automatically dials the fire department and the 17th Security Forces Squadron law enforcement desk, according to Donna Casey, 17th TRW SARC.

From a SARC point of view, these boxes give a sense of security.

"Sexual Assault Prevention and Response will benefit from these boxes by ensuring the safety of base personnel," said Casey. "In the case of a sexual assault, victims will be able to receive services as soon as possible or even be able to help prevent a sexual assault by calling when they see something suspicious or feel they are in an unsafe situation."

For the Safety Office, the emergency call boxes are a great addition to the base.

"The call boxes provide an individual with the ability to reach emergency services personnel in the event of an injury, medical emergency or mishap on perimeter road," said Spooner.

During hours of darkness, the light on the top of the emergency call boxes provide additional lighting in the area.
