Goodfellow Air Force Base service members are supporting Senior Hunger Awareness Month by participating in Heroes Against Hunger, delivering meals to homebound elderly here March 3 through 14.

Volunteers delivered meals through the non-profit organization Meals for the Elderly, which ensures homebound elderly here and in the surrounding areas are served with one hot, nutritious, home-delivered meal each weekday.

"It is nice to know that they really do appreciate seeing us," said Staff Sgt. John Churchill, 316th Training Squadron instructor and Heroes Against Hunger volunteer. "The Meals for the Elderly volunteers may be the only personal contact they have on a daily basis. It also seems that they enjoy seeing us in the uniform. I think it's reminiscent or nostalgic for some of them."

The Heroes Against Hunger event benefitted the elderly as well as the heroes.

"I like to see the smiling faces," said Tech. Sgt. Jimmy Clanagan, 316th TRS instructor and Heroes Against Hunger volunteer. "It feels good to be able to give back to such a nice community."

Good nutrition and personal contact help improve the health and well-being of the elderly and their quality of life.

Leann Criswell, Meals for the Elderly volunteer director said, "Our goal is to enable the elderly to live independently in their own homes for as long as possible."
