The Honorable Dwain Morrison, Mayor of San Angelo, Texas, and three city council members visited Goodfellow Oct. 25, to tour the 17th Training Wing, learn about the wing's mission and to induct the mayor as an Honorary Wing Commander.

Mayor Morrison and the council members spent the majority of their visit going from squadron to squadron to speak with Team Goodfellow members and learn about how they contribute to the wing mission.

"Goodfellow's mission and presence is important to San Angelo," Morrison explains. "San Angelo embraces and welcomes all military, students and staff, and encourages them to strive always for excellence."

In addition to seeing the wing mission first hand, a ceremony was held inducting Mayor Morrison as the Honorary Wing Commander of the 17th Training Wing. Honorary commanders and their military counterparts actively communicate with each other and exchange ideas in their areas of expertise, to better work together for the benefit of the base and the community. For Mayor Morrison, this duty goes beyond his postion as mayor.

"I recently retired after 25 years as a fence builder and my wife just retired after 29 years as a school teacher, it is important to understand that we are not wealthy and we do not reside in the affluent part of town," said the Mayor. "Because we both are from humble beginnings, the honor of honorary commander is very special to me."

While the visit focused on training and mission, the mayor said that a little piece of history held one of the highlights of his visit.

"I was impressed by the fire training and the intelligence training," said Morrison. "If cornered, I would have to admit that the MiG-29 was my favorite experience."
