The new chiller replaces an older model that used R-22 Freon, which is no longer authorized to be used due to environmental issues it causes. "The new chiller compared to the old chiller will save the base 69,906 kWh hours annual or $4,775 annually in energy costs," said Mary Lumsdon, 17th Civil Engineer Squadron base energy manager. "Goodfellow also received $367 in energy rebates from the electric distribution company for the energy reduction achieved by the new chiller." Goodfellow is also pursuing to have other energy and cost saving changes made to base infrastructures: · Construction of a chiller loop system that will connect 12 individual buildings so that all the facilities will receive cooling from one source during mild weather and will use additional chillers as needed, estimated $107,745 annual energy savings · Replacement of street lights and exterior lights with LEDs, estimated $46,171 annual energy savings · Upgrade of windows in eight facilities, estimated $30,201 annual energy savings · Replacement of boilers in five facilities, estimated $6650 annual energy savings · Replacement of interior lighting and installation of occupancy sensors in 27 facilities, estimated $25,445 annual energy savings These replacements tie into the Air Forces' Cost Conscious Culture program, which encourages all members keep a mindset of making cost considerations part of everything they do and being as energy efficient as possible.
