Goodfellow walks in remembrance Published Oct. 2, 2013 By Airman 1st Class Joshua Edwards 17th Training Wing Public Affairs GOODFELLOW AIR FORCE BASE, Texas -- Team Goodfellow members met for a 4.1 mile remembrance ruck march honoring Airman 1st Class Elizabeth Jacobson at the 17th Security Forces Squadron Sept. 28. Sept. 28 marks the day, eight years ago, when Jacobson was killed in action during Operation Iraqi freedom. She was the first female Airman killed in that operation and the first security forces member killed in combat since 1975. "We remember on this day in 2005 Airman 1st Class Jacobson gave everything she had for her nation and fellow Airmen," said Chaplain (Capt.) Robert Bohnsack, 17th Training Wing. "She served with honor courage and integrity." Col. Dominic Bernardi, 17th Mission Support Group Commander, spoke at the event. "Airman Jacobson was deployed to Iraq for about three months and she had already made her mark on her unit," said Col. Bernardi. "She was for seeking challenges, hard assignments and was out doing the hard jobs. She always believed in treating others fairly and one thing she always said was, 'We're only on Earth for a little while, so live life to the fullest and carry a smile.'" Units from across Goodfellow came out to support the march, including some of Goodfellow's tenant units. One Marine said he came out to honor a fallen comrade. "She should be remembered just for the fact that it's been so long since a woman has died in combat," said Marine Corps Lance Cpl. Marc Spender, Marine Corps Detachment student. "I think this brings light to women in the armed services and combat zones. It sounds like she was a great lady and she should be remembered for what she has done." Today, a plaque with the likeness of Jacobson rests in front of the 17th SFS building and Goodfellow's main gate bears her name.
