Air Force ROTC Detachment 847 received the 2013 High Flight award as the best medium-size detachment in the Southwest Region at Angelo State University Sept. 18.

This award recognizes the best Air Force ROTC detachment within a geographic region of the U.S. based on its education program, cadet activities, university and public interactions, community service projects and cadet accomplishments.

"I have the distinct privilege to serve 36 different universities with ROTC detachments," said Col. Mark Mattison, Air Force ROTC Southwest Region Commander. "I'm very very proud and excited and honored to be here to present this award to who I think is the best detachment in the entire region that I have the opportunity to serve. Congratulations to you all."

After Col. Mattison presented the 2013 High Flight award, Brian May, Angelo State University president, spoke to the detachment and presented them with a letter of appreciation.

"I just want to say how proud I am and to follow what the colonel said 'you are the best detachment I know of,'" said May. "I want you to know, we don't take you for granted. You are truly the best we have to offer."

Detachment 847 received the High Flight award two years in a row and the third time they've received the award in the past four years.
