Goodfellow Air Force Base celebrated the Air Force's 66th birthday with a ball at the McNease Convention Center Sept. 13, with the theme for this year's ball was Powered by Airmen, Fueled by Initiative.

"Without the 'Power' and innovated 'Fuel' of our Goodfellow Airmen, the Air Force would not be able to continue our proud heritage and overall mission of 'Fly, Fight, Win,'" said Staff Sgt. Ryan Mitchell, 17th Force Support Squadron Airman Leadership School instructor. "This theme applies to Goodfellow because we train the country's leading Firefighting and ISR professionals by using Airmen and their innovated ideas."

The Air Force's official birthdate is Sept. 18 and is youngest of the U.S. Military branches, having gone from being a division of the Army to its own branch.

The military ball is an event as old as the militaries themselves, while serving as a tribute and honor to the history of the services.

Goodfellow held its first annual Air Force Ball in 1977.
